4" Stenocereus pruinosus “Gray Ghost Cactus'

Stenocereus pruinosus ‘Gray Ghost’ is a striking columnar cactus known for its powdery, blue-gray skin and tall, sculptural form. Its stems develop a smooth, ghostly frost-like coating—hence the nickname—accented by evenly spaced ribs and short, tidy spines. Over time, it forms impressive vertical columns that begin to spiral slightly.

Native to the dry forests of southern Mexico, this species thrives in full sun, excellent drainage, and minimal watering. Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings and use a gritty cactus mix to prevent root rot. In strong light, the plant intensifies its silvery bloom and maintains its signature “ghost” appearance.

Fun fact: Stenocereus pruinosus is traditionally known in Mexico for producing edible cactus fruits called pitayas, which come in vibrant reds and pinks—an unexpected contrast to the plant’s cool exterior.
